Partnership will deploy HYDROGRID Insight for inflow forecasting, production optimization and maintenance planning, maximizing yield at one of Nigeria’s largest dams

Mabon Limited has partnered with HYDROGRID to implement its hydropower optimization platform at the 40 MW Dadin Kowa Hydropower Plant in Gombe State, Nigeria. Situated on the Gongola River, the plant is part of the country’s second-largest dam, impounding a reservoir of 300 km² with a design storage capacity of 2.8 billion cubic meters.
Through this collaboration, HYDROGRID will support Mabon in improving overall plant performance by providing smarter, data-driven insights to optimize seasonal water distribution, minimize spillage, and align maintenance with low-value generation windows.
“Mabon Dadin Kowa Hydropower Plant is only a few years into operation, which makes this the right moment to build smarter systems into how we run it. With HYDROGRID, we will have better visibility into what is coming—whether that is the next rainy season or the next maintenance window—so we can make decisions that serve both the plant and the communities depending on it. This is also about sustainability: using every cubic meter of water wisely and ensuring the plant delivers long-term value in line with Nigeria’s clean energy goals.”
— Richard Madubunyi, Managing Director/CEO, Mabon Limited
Completed and grid-connected in 2020, Mabon Dadin Kowa Hydropower Plant has generated more than 900 GWh of clean electricity in its initial years. The plant supports regional development through local infrastructure, education, and employment, and contributes to Nigeria’s Electricity Vision 30:30:30, which targets 30 GW by 2030, with renewables accounting for at least 30%.
“We are proud to collaborate with Mabon on Dadin Kowa, as they set out to combine robust infrastructure with cutting-edge digital tools early in the plant’s operational life. This approach will accelerate performance gains and ensure the plant delivers maximum value over its lifetime.”
— Janice Goodenough, CEO, HYDROGRID
How Digitalization Will Elevate Dadin Kowa’s Impact
- Efficient Water Management: Seasonal variability demands precise inflow forecasting and optimized dispatch.
- Minimize Spillage and Maximize Output: Advanced planning ensures every cubic meter counts in a reservoir of 300 km².
- Long-Term Maintenance Alignment: Smart scheduling minimizes the financial impact of maintenance windows and preserves overall plant value.
- Accelerating Value and Environmental Payback: Early adoption of digital tools accelerates value realization.
